On Tuesday, December 8, 1981, 13 coal miners lost their lives as the result of an explosion at the No. 21 Mine, an underground coal mine near Whitwell, Tennessee.
The mines was owned by Grundy Mining Company.

Dana Jo Cooley's father Mort was a miner in the Tennessee Mountains. He worked for TCC (Tennessee Consolidated Coal Company) and most unfortunately was one of the miners whose lives were lost in the huge mining accident in the early 1980's in the Griffith Creek Community of Tennessee. This is the uniform he wore the day before the mine explosion.
